Frequently Asked Questions
1. How many sessions will I need to commit to?
The number of sessions for each individual will vary depending on the type of issues, severity of the problem/s and the goals negotiated during your first session. On average, people attend between 6-10 sessions for short term/ brief intervention. There is often regular review and feedback which will keep you involved in the treatment process. Should you be involved in group therapy, you will be required to commit to attend for the entirety of the module you commence (anticipated between 5 and 10 group sessions per module). This will ensure you maximise your therapeutic outcome from the treatment modality offered.
2. Do I need a mental health diagnosis to see a psychologist?
No. Most people at some stage of their life experience stress and struggle relating to the daily demands of living. Psychologists can help with supporting you and also build better coping mechanisms in order to deal with any stress or transitional issues. We accept referrals from different funding sources such as TAC; Work Cover; Care In Mind; NDIS and EAP.
Fees and Rebates
At Birch Tree Psychology we believe in providing affordable and effective mental healthcare for our clients. Our fees are considerably below the recommended fee set by the Australian Psychological Society of $251 per hour and below many of our competitors within the Macedon Ranges and Greater Bendigo area.
All fees are payable at the time of consultation or for Zoom sessions payable prior to the session.
A cancellation fee will be charged if you give less than 24 hours notice of cancellation. Practice expenses need to be covered and your appointment could be allocated to another person if you give enough notice.
Medicare rebates are available to you if you have a valid Mental Health Care Plan. Our staff are registered Medicare providers.
Medicare provides rebates for 10 individual and 10 group sessions per calendar year. If you wish to apply for the Medicare rebates, you will need to make an appointment with your GP to complete a Mental Health Care Plan Assessment. There will usually be an out-of-pocket gap between the Medicare rebate and the full-session fee (see below for indicative costs).
Rebates may apply to sessions and for clients referred by a GP or a psychiatrist with a Mental Health Plan, the gap is approximately $65 per session. Private health insurance rebates may also be available to you depending on your health fund.
